These 10 Laundry Tricks Can Save Time, Money, and Arguments

You don’t Need Magic to Increase Your Serenity Doing the Laundry

A recent survey by SWNS Digital reveals that doing laundry is the second most hated household chore, just behind doing the dishes.

The survey of 1,000 men and 1,000 women who live together, and shared chores shows that 67% do a lousy job in the hopes that their partner will take over the job.

37% of the people report they would abstain from alcohol for the rest of their lives if only they never had to do a household chore again.

And 70% of these folks say that doing the chores caused at least one spat between them, with 53% fighting over when to do it, 50% fighting over how to do it, and 48% over who should do it.

61% of the people report that they must re-do the work after their partner “finished wrong.”

And all that double-doing wastes time, money, and does huge damage to our environment, with all the chemicals, plastic detergent bottles and electric bills that pile up.

To help ease the pain and burden of this unloved, but very necessary chore, here are 10 tricks you can use to reduce the stress when you do the laundry.

1) Write Notes on the Washer

Leave a love note for your Partner, or a reminder to order more Tru Earth Laundry Strips with this simple trick. Put a load of clothes into your washing machine and use a dry-erase marker to note on the lid.

Using the enamel finish on your washing machine lids is like a whiteboard, and dry erase your notes easily with a dry paper towel.

2) Add a Little Salt to the Wash

If sugar makes the medicine go down, then salt makes your brights brighter. Add a teaspoon of table salt to your bright colours load and you prevent them from fading. You can also wash these items inside out to help make colours last longer.

3) Old School Stain Remover

Food drips on your favourite shirt or slacks can ruin your day. But here’s a quick little old-school hack to get those greasy stains out. Use a piece of simple white chalk – the kind you used in school on the blackboard, Rub a little of the chalk onto the stain. It will absorb into the grease stain and lift it out in the wash cycle.

4) A Clean Machine Cleans Better

Your washing machine needs a regular cleaning itself. Every month – on the 1st or 15th for example – set your washer to the largest load and hottest water settings. Add a quart of white vinegar and a cup of baking soda and let the washer agitate for a minute.

Next, open the lid or pause the cycle and let the mixture sit for an hour. Scrub the lid by hand to remove any buildup there.

After an hour, let the cycle complete and run a second cycle on hot to remove any residue left behind.

5) Freeze out the Wrinkles

When you use an iron or handheld streamer, you waste time and energy. When you want to get the wrinkles out of shirts or slacks, just toss a few ice cubes with your wrinkled clothes. As the ice melts and the water turns to steam, it will remove the wrinkles. This trick performs miracles on your lighter fabrics but loses its effectiveness on heavier clothes.

 6) Freeze Your Jeans

If you like to wear your jeans more than once between washings, stick them in the freezer between wears.

The frigid air kills bacteria that can cause that nasty odor.

7) Use a Salad Spinner

Afraid to put some of your more delicate items in the spin dryer? No problem: use a salad spinner to dry them out, then hang them on a rack to dry.

8) Stick it to Lint Buildup

You probably empty the lint trap in the dryer before each load. But there is always a little bit that escapes your clean up, and over time, that builds up and could create a fire hazard.

Here’s a handy trick to help you get out all the lint.

Pick up a paint stir-stick from your local hardware store. Wrap a clean rag around one end. Dampen the rag with a little splash of water. Now use the stick to poke around the lint trap to get out all the little lint bits.

9) (a). Don’t Just Throw That Lint Away!

Do you love to go camping, but hate all the time it takes to build and start a great campfire? What you need is tinder. To build your fire, use the lint from the dryer!

Here’s how: Stuff each well of an egg carton with dryer lint. Then pour melted wax into each well and let them cool. The wax waterproofs the dryer lint and carton and helps the starter burn longer.

Toss the egg carton into your firepit, add the fire and you have a great place to toast your marshmallows.

9) (b). Another Way to Recycle that Lint as a Firestarter

So, you have your kindling (small sticks and twigs) and your fuel (logs) so what you need is that tinder. But you are unsure of using the trick above with the egg carton.

How about old toilet paper rolls? Just stuff empty toilet paper tubes with dryer lint. These “dryer lint logs” light quickly and easily and burn long enough to light up the kindling. And you won’t waste any lighter fluid!
